Families are praising the Las Vegas school for working to combat the rise in racist incidents

Administrators at a South Las Vegas school sent a message to parents saying there has been an increase in racially motivated incidents this year and they are working to combat the problem.

Parents at Ortwein Elementary School have praised the school for being transparent about the issue.

They are grateful that the school is committed to combating the use of racist comments.

Representatives from the Clark County School District confirmed that a similar message was sent to families in both the school’s fourth and fifth grades on Tuesday.

An assistant principal’s message said they have been working in recent weeks to eliminate racially motivated insults on campus.

The post shares explicit terms like the N-word, “monkey,” and a slur toward the Asian community as examples.

The assistant director calls the words hurtful and “used to cause harm.”

News 3 spoke with the parent of a fourth-grader who says the insults are concerning.

“I’m really grateful that parents, school and a community of people are coming together to be able to take action against it – to really put a stop to something like this,” James Miller said. “Because those are words that can really hurt someone. It can be harmful, especially if children don’t really know the fullness behind those words.”

The email also makes it clear that the school has no tolerance for these racist statements and that students can be suspended.

Parents say it’s important to talk to their children about this topic because “these problems start at home.”
