New Disney Cruise Ship: Disney Treasure makes grand debut with 3 never-before-done locations

The all-new Disney Treasure has been officially christened and “Good Morning America” got a first look aboard the sixth ship to join the magical Disney Cruise Line fleet.

The sister ship to the Disney Wish is inspired by Walt Disney’s love of exploration and will immerse guests in an adventure theme throughout. The Treasure features all-new locations with live experiences and accents that bring Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and Disney Parks to life like never before – such as the Plaza de Coco dining experience, Haunted Mansion Parlor and live music jazz club, the Scat Cat Lounge.

Disney CEO Bob Iger joined “GMA” co-anchor Michael Strahan aboard the Treasure to discuss the scoops on this new ship, including what he thinks fans will love about the extended stories at sea from the theme parks and movies.

“With every new ship comes new stories. And what these ships are all about is bringing our Disney stories around the world,” Iger said. “As you know, people in our theme parks interact with our stories all the time, but they are fixed locations. So this gives us the opportunity to tell more stories to more people in more places. And I think people will love it. “

While all ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet “bring some things from our theme parks,” Iger said, “this is one that relies on storytelling that is very specific to theme parks.”

“For example, there’s a Haunted Mansion bar here – so I think this is the first time we’re actually expressing theme park stories on our ships,” Iger explained.

A tribute to Walt Disney’s passion for travel and discovery

“Walt actually liked to travel, even though he came from a small town,” Iger said. “He went to Europe early on and took black and white photographs with a camera that we actually still have those photographs of. And when you see the photographs, you get a sense of that, I think. One of the things this does is that it allows people, as Walt did back then, to enjoy the Disney experience, but at the same time see the world.”

As 4,000 passengers prepare to depart Port Canaveral for the Caribbean next month on the maiden voyage, Iger said he is most excited when guests can enjoy “a lot more interactivity” and activations throughout the ship. “It’s just much more kinetic all around you, almost wherever you go.”

The storytelling on board the Treasure was made possible by the ship’s honorary ‘godparents’, which is a traditional maritime role to grant symbolic good luck and safe passage.

“We decided we would make cast members from all over Disney our godparents,” Iger said. “The reason we did that is because you can build these amazing ships with all the engineering in the world and the technology, and of course the artistry, but it’s the people that make them come alive. It’s people who really create the experiences for our guests offer And so there is a way to respect those people and give them something to appreciate their work. We felt that everyone – all of our cast members – should be the godparents.

Scat Cat Lounge brings the groovy penthouse version of “Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat” to the real world for the first time in a hip new location inspired by the music-loving feline.

It offers an elegant onboard destination to experience live music and a themed craft cocktail menu with drinks such as the Créme de la Créme Martini infused with cognac, chocolate and a nutmeg topping and the Cat Drink with clarified bourbon, amaro, Aperol and fresh lemon.

Haunted house salon

The world’s first Haunted Mansion-inspired bar onboard the Disney Treasure welcomes passengers 21 and older for a mind-blowing experience.

From craft cocktails to nostalgic decor and beloved characters, the Haunted Mansion Parlor immerses guests in the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga and brings a favorite legend to life in a new way.

“Our lounge, reminiscent of a first-class cruise ship lounge of yesteryear, where we tell the story of a captain who had a disastrous date with his bride-to-be,” said Darren McBurney, the Cruise’s opening director. Treasure, told “GMA” about the backstory of space.

The design resembles a first-class salon of a classic golden age cruise ship, inspired by the original Haunted Mansion with a nautical twist.

Visitors will encounter some legendary characters from the original Disney Parks attraction, plus some new seafarers, in a portrait gallery featuring the ghostly residents of the Disney Treasure.

“Many years ago, when they first created the Haunted Mansion Disneyland attraction, Walt Disney Imagineering Rolly Crump began creating the illusion of a haunted aquarium that was never actually used in the attraction itself,” McBurney said. “But we are so happy to be able to create it here at the Haunted Mansion Parlor.”

When does Disney Treasure depart with cruise passengers?

The treasure celebrated a maritime tradition Tuesday evening with a baptism in New York City in preparation for its official maiden voyage on Dec. 21.

The Disney Treasure embarks on its maiden voyage, a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida, followed by an inaugural season of seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral.
