SunLive – Driver who speeds is fined after a traffic stop

A Tauranga woman is facing enforcement action after she was caught driving 30km over the speed limit while schools finished for the day.

Around 2.50pm on Tuesday, November 19, a police unit spotted a vehicle traveling at excessive speed in a 50 km/h zone on State Highway 2 near Bethlehem.

Police signaled the vehicle to stop on Te Paeroa Road and conducted a roadside breath test.

The woman had drunk more than four times the legal limit for breath alcohol.

The woman’s car was seized and her driver’s license was confiscated.

Acting Sergeant Rebekah McLean is disappointed and shocked by these results.

“This behavior is absurd and dangerous, and has the potential to lead to serious consequences.”

“Police see too many preventable deaths on our roads, and we make no apologies for tackling risky behavior like drink driving and speeding.”

The 42-year-old woman was issued an infringement notice for her speeding offense and is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on Friday, November 22, charged with excessive alcohol consumption in the third and subsequent periods.

We recognize that there is the power in our communities to make a difference too.

If you know someone has had a few drinks, or is over the limit and is about to drive, say something.

The police want people to enjoy themselves, but if you’ve had too much, call a family member, a friend or a taxi to pick you up – never get behind the wheel.
