Bride Calls Girlfriend ‘Selfish’ After Saying Bridesmaids Can’t Afford ‘Bridgerton’ Dresses

A woman and her friend have a disagreement over her extravagant wedding vision, especially the bridesmaid dresses.

In a message at RedditOn the ‘Wedding Drama’ forum, the woman explained that her friend is expecting a Christmas proposal from her boyfriend, so she is already doing her wedding planning. And she has big ideas, according to the original poster (OP).

“The wedding she envisions will cost at least $50,000,” the OP wrote, noting that she plans to invite 200 people and have a Regency theme a la Bridgerton.

The friend wants the entire bridal party (and her family) to wear these Bridgerton-inspired looks, with all the trimmings. ‘The dresses she wants are amended dresses,” the OP wrote. “If you haven’t seen the show yet, imagine the most elaborate fantasy-historical costumes you can imagine. Petticoats, corsets, gloves, giant wigs, etc. She really wants her wedding to look like an episode of a Netflix show.

When the OP heard this news, she “spent the rest of the night begging (her friend) to be more realistic” about her plans.

“There’s no way her bridesmaids can afford something like this,” she wrote. “But she told me I was being selfish and that all her friends have good jobs, and it wouldn’t be a problem for them to spend a little bit of money on a unique event experience.”

The OP kept trying to dissuade her friend from her lofty idea, but to no avail. “I kept asking her, but she waved her hand and said she has a specific vision that she knows how to make happen,” she wrote.

Now the OP is “afraid” of being asked to be a bridesmaid at this wedding. “She’s not even engaged yet and she’s already spending my money!” she concluded her message.

In the comments section, people were firmly on the OP’s side, arguing that it was her friend who was selfish.

One person wrote: ‘It’s quite selfish to expect others to spend their money to make your dream come true. If she asks you to be a bridesmaid, I would object and suggest that you are not rich in Bridgerton so you will have to decline. If she takes care of the costume, you would be happy to do so.”

Others advised the OP to “back off” and let her friend come to the realization on her own that perhaps she was expecting too much from her future bridesmaids.

“It’s her wedding and her delusions. Make lots of ‘that’s interesting’ comments. But stop raining on her parade. She’ll get tired of that, but stop bitching about your girlfriend,” one person wrote. “Reality will hit soon. It is not necessary for you to be the one inserting reality; that’s her boyfriend’s job.”

Another said: ‘Let her dream and think big. If she starts planning and looking at things, she will learn and change where necessary.’

One Redditor encouraged the OP to leave the situation entirely, jokingly in the words of Bridgerton narrator Lady Whistledown: “Dear kind reader… Please hasten in the opposite direction of your friend. When the dreaded wedding takes place, you will want to be far away from the scandal.”

Someone else offered a possible solution to the clothing dilemma.

“We have a costume rental place locally that has soooo many Bridgerton-esque outfits! (And great quality, not the cheap stuff from the discount store. She does the clothes for all the theater productions in our state.) It was $35 to rent for one day,” they shared. “If she wants a wedding like that, she can make a deal with a store and factor it into her budget to make her guests look like this.”

Others wanted the OP to provide future updates as the situation unfolded. “I want the update if this ends up on Bridezillas,” one person joked.
