Gynecologist ‘raped 87 patients aged 14 to 67 for 20 years and secretly filmed examinations’ in case Norway was turned upside down

A FORMER gynecologist has been accused of raping 87 women during his surgery and filming the attacks for 20 years in a sex abuse scandal that has rocked Norway.

Arne Bye, 55, is on trial on grim allegations of sexual abuse – including against two children who were 14 and 15 years old at the time of the alleged assaults.

The oldest woman was 67 when Bye allegedly raped her.

He has pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and 35 counts of abuse of power, meaning he could spend up to 21 years behind bars.

Police seized more than 6,000 hours of footage during their investigation, including of his gynecological examinations.

They were allegedly carried out on patients without their knowledge, which officials described as “sensitive and detailed”.

Bye allegedly inserted a “deodorant-like,” “bottle-like” and cylindrical object into the women – with no medical reason to do so.

A woman said in a speech in court in Trøndelag: “I thought I was going to die.”

Another unnamed woman said she went to her GP surgery for a sore throat before undergoing one of the invasive tests.

She told how she ended up on a bench in her underwear and said: “I thought he was my doctor so I did what he said.”

The complaint against Bye states that the alleged assaults during the interrogations “occurred quickly and unexpectedly.”

They took place in Frosta, a small town of just 2,600 inhabitants on the Norwegian coast.

The court has seen a graphic video shot by Bye, in which State Attorney Richard Haugen Lyng says: “We have video recordings of the attack itself.

“In that sense, we have a rather special evidentiary situation in the case, because large parts of the indictment are illustrated with video material,” the prosecutor said.

The former doctor claimed in court that he wrote down appointments for fear of lawsuits – and said he never saw them again.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK said one of the clips shows him setting up several cameras in the room before beginning to investigate one of the women named in the case.

The outlet also said he partially admitted to the rape allegations in court on Wednesday.

As early as 2006, concerns were raised about him by another doctor in the gynecology department of a local hospital.

One of Bye’s patients, who was there for further treatment, said her doctor massaged her genitals during the examination.

Police launched an investigation in August 2022 after health authorities alerted them to the possible behavior.

Bye was able to keep his job until the following year, when charges were filed.

Because the trial continues, he has not been remanded in custody.
