Sulur police in Coimbatore district on Sunday arrested a youth for allegedly raping and robbing an 85-year-old woman.

An 85-year-old woman from a village near Sulu complained to police that she was robbed of her five-sovereign chain and mobile phone at her home on November 21.

According to police, the woman lived alone in her home surrounded by farms.

The police scientific team examined the crime scene and focused on the fingerprint of an outsider. The fingerprint bureau examined the casual fingerprint in the police database and found a match in Shahul Hameed, 24, of Edayarpalayam, who was previously involved in similar robberies.

Police on Saturday traced Hameed to Government Hospital, Slur, where he sought treatment for fractures on his left hand and right leg sustained in a two-wheeler accident, police claimed.

A team led by Slur inspector Lenin Appadurai interrogated Hameed, who admitted to robbing the elderly woman. However, when police examined his cell phone, police found a video of the boy raping the woman and recording the act on his cell phone.

Hameed was arrested on Sunday for trespassing, rape and theft. Cases have been registered against him at Slur, Palladam, Avinashi and Kamanaickenpalayam police stations.
