New research has revealed the most dangerous areas of Britain to drive in outside London, with one shocking place on the list.

The research, conducted by Toll roadanalyzed Department for Transport data from 2018 to 2023, identifying the regions with the highest average number of collisions per billion vehicle kilometers.

Blackpool, famous for its lively promenade and seaside attractions, topped the list with 976 collisions per billion vehicle kilometres. The most dangerous year in the area was 2021, with 1,090 collisions per billion vehicle kilometers.

Kingston upon Hull, better known as Hull, was in second place, with an average of 943 collisions per billion vehicle kilometres. 2018 emerged as the riskiest year, with 1,051 collisions.

But shockingly, in third place are the Isles of Scilly.

The cluster of breathtakingly beautiful islands in the southwest saw an average of 936 collisions per billion vehicle kilometers.

Despite their idyllic and peaceful surroundings, 2023 marked a sharp increase, with 2,199 collisions recorded per billion vehicle kilometers.

Luton ranked fourth, with 856 collisions per billion vehicle kilometres, followed by Brighton and Hove in fifth place, with 851 collisions per billion vehicle kilometres. Both areas experienced their most dangerous years in 2018 and 2021 respectively.

The full top ten list includes:

  • 6th: Southampton (781 collisions)
  • 7th: Reading (748 collisions)
  • 8th: Blackburn with Darwen (734 collisions)
  • 9th: Nottingham (722 collisions)
  • 10th: Liverpool (678 collisions)

British areas recorded 335 collisions per billion vehicle kilometers during the study period.

Moray, in Scotland, emerged as the safest area to drive, with just 82 recorded collisions per billion vehicle kilometres.

Commenting on the findings, ME Wijnmalen, CEO of Tollwayr, said: “These results highlight significant regional differences in road safety.

“Although areas such as the Isles of Scilly are renowned for their natural beauty, these statistics remind us that even serene locations can present unique driving challenges.

“With winter approaching, drivers must be extra careful to ensure their safety.”
