David Coulthard praises F1 driver with 102 races for being under ‘pressure’ from his new teammate in 2025

David Coulthard has been through quite a few teammates during a brilliant fourteen-year Formula 1 career.

He stood next to three world champions and still managed ten victories in cars that were never dominant.

Kimi Raikkonen challenged him during their stay at McLarenand so did his compatriot Mika Hakkinen.

Coulthard was an able deputy for the Finns in their pursuit of championship success, but was never able to really make a run himself.

Alex Albon will be under ‘pressure’ from Carlos Sainz in 2025

For two seasons from 2025, Alex Albon gets a new teammate in the form of a multiple race winner Carlos Sainz.

He is largely unchallenged by recent teammates in Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeantwhile Franco Colapinto has offered more tasks.

Being a former Williams As a driver himself, Coulthard knows a thing or two about the pressures from the other side of that level, as he said in the Drive to Wynn podcast.

“I would like to imagine that if he takes the Williams opportunity he can go there and bring a whole range of knowledge and experience.

“Alex Albon will be under a bit of pressure, which will be very interesting to see how he stacks up next to Carlos.”

What is Williams’ long-term plan?

Looking at Williams’ recent moves, such as investing heavily in infrastructure and signing two ambitious and proven drivers, their trajectory is positive.

For the first time in a decade, it feels like they have the potential to become regulars in midfield, and perhaps even have a shot at podium finishes soon.

They are unlikely to bear the fruits of their labor until the start of the new technical regulations in 2026, but then everything should stabilize a bit.

It could be that the cost cap is making itself felt, and eventually the historically great teams start to falter at the top of the standings, allowing for some new faces.

If Aston Martin and more recently McLaren has found a way to compete at the front, then it’s not out of reach for Williams.
