For Black Friday I’m buying an electric wheelbarrow and I refuse to feel bad about it. You should consider one too, especially if you have aging parents who enjoy gardening, or you yourself Are the aging person who enjoys gardening.

For twenty years I have been proud of the countless number of wheelbarrows I have moved, full of dirt, compost, wood chips and wood. But time is not on my side, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to do it as I approach my fifties. This summer I borrowed a neighbor’s electric wheelbarrow. If I married the wheelbarrow, I couldn’t be expected to bring it back, right? The wheelbarrow didn’t do all the work for me; it gave me a gentle assist, which meant I could do more work without that work ruining my body. Black Friday is the perfect time to consider these types of machines: here are four models I’m looking at.

Classic wheelbarrow with power

There’s a reason why the classic wheelbarrow design works: it fits in tight spaces, has few parts, and is easy to dump. Corners are less of a problem with a wheelbarrow than with a cart, as is turning, which it can do with almost no space. Here are two I would look at.

Electric utility cart

Although they lack some of the flexibility of a classic wheelbarrow, utility carts can hold more weight and larger loads. Most have the sides detachable to become a flat cart, and these carts travel forward, rather than dragging behind, which is my preference.
