Pilot projects on 4th and 5th streets can be dangerous in the snow

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – On a snowy day like Tuesday morning, narrow roads can pose some danger.

Cars parked too close to the road can be damaged by snow plows, or if a car slides on the ice, they can be hit.

Grand Junction City Councilman Cody Kennedy has been very vocal about his stance on the 4th and 5th streets pilot project in downtown Grand Junction. In his view, the narrower roads are actually less safe for pedestrians, especially in weather conditions like Grand Junction experienced on Tuesday.

“It’s some of the things I mentioned when it comes to street design, except the snow, the ice and the slush just makes it a little bit more of a prominent concern,” Kennedy said.

And for business owners on 4th and 5th streets, the changes have had an impact on their employees.

Take Rockslide Brewing on 4th Street, for example.

Brian Oliver, general manager at Rockslide, has had to deal with several of his employees almost being hit by a car.

“Actually, I had two,” Oliver said. “One of them was almost hit by another car in his car and the other was crossing Colorado and almost got hit by a car.”
