“A tragedy on all levels:” Woman charged with manslaughter, DUI after head-on collision kills minor in Northport

NORTH GATE, Ala. (WBRC) – A woman is in custody and charged in the death of a minor following a head-on collision in Tuscaloosa Friday morning.

Rachael Robinson, 29, has been charged with manslaughter, two counts of first-degree assault and driving under the influence for a wreck that left one dead and two others with “critical injuries.”

Northport Police responded to the scene of the crash on the Hugh Thomas Bridge around 3:43 a.m. Friday morning.

Police discovered that a vehicle was driving the wrong way on the bridge and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Although Robinson was uninjured in the crash, she was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

There were three people in the car that hit them. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

The victim was a minor, while the two survivors are both adults.

After the Northport Police Department’s Traffic Reconstruction Unit requested the Violent Crimes Unit, evidence was collected that, after consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, led to Robinson being charged.

“I just can’t reiterate that this is a tragedy on all levels,” said Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Co. Sheriff’s Office, calling Robinson’s actions “unacceptable behavior.”

“We’ve spent decades doing research, public advertising, teaching driving lessons everywhere,” Kennedy told WBRC. “Local law enforcement is always on the lookout for this and we will prosecute anyone found to be under the influence while operating a motor vehicle to the fullest extent of the law, and the point of that is to prevent tragedies like the one we had. last night.”

Because the victim is a minor, officials are not releasing their name.
