Jihadists and allies enter Syria’s second city in a lightning attack

Jihadists and their Turkish-backed allies pushed into Syria’s second city Aleppo on Friday, waging a lightning offensive against forces of the Iran- and Russia-backed government.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the fighters took control of “half of the city of Aleppo” as regime forces withdrew.

The offensive began on Wednesday, the same day a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah took effect in neighboring Lebanon.
