Tom Nichols thinks Kash Patel’s nomination is ‘dangerous’

The Atlantic Ocean staff writer Tom Nichols responded to by Kash Patel lecture to lead the FBI by claiming he “believes in nothing but serving” the president-elect Donald Trump.

On Saturday, Trump took to Truth Social to announce that Patel will replace the current FBI director Christopher Wray for his next government. Patel, a longtime Trump loyalist, defended Trump during his first administration amid an FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Nichols responded to the development during a panel on MSNBC by claiming that it is “incredibly dangerous” and that Trump is “creating an administration of people who really don’t care about the interests of the United States.”

Patel is about as dangerous as they come, not because he really believes in anything, but because I would encourage people to take a look at a piece we had on him in the Atlantic. He doesn’t believe in serving Donald Trump other than his own interests. And what you’re going to see is Donald Trump creating a government of people who really don’t care about the interests of the United States. That they are there to build an authoritarian country and place themselves beyond the reach of the rule of law. And if you want to stay outside the reach of the rule of law, one of the first things you’ll want to capture is the FBI. Because the other thing that says Patel should be put there is that the FBI is no longer in the business of law enforcement.

It’s certainly not in the realm of counterintelligence, which our enemies will be very happy to hear. It’s about protecting Donald Trump, advancing Donald Trump’s interests, and ensuring that Donald Trump’s enemies are investigated and Donald Trump’s friends go free. I mean, this is really, you know, I guess if we still have the capacity to be shocked, it’s shocking. But I think this is something that we probably saw coming by a lot of us, and you know, it shouldn’t be that surprising. But it is an incredibly dangerous development.
