JOHANNESBURG – An acting Gauteng school principal is fighting for his life in hospital after gunmen ambushed him in his office, shot him multiple times and fled the scene, leaving him for dead.

The incident happened during normal classes at Northview High School in Johannesburg, during which the suspects shot the victim six times.

According to information, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, two unknown men entered the school building disguised as service providers.

“They came in under the guise that they had given him a quote for a tree felling service,” Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona said.

“After hitting him six times, they fled the scene. School management contacted emergency medical services (EMS) and police on the scene. The acting principal was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.”

Mabona, who told it Short news the victim was fighting for his life in the intensive care unit (ICU), saying he could not be released from the hospital for fear of the victim’s safety.

He said the department sent psychosocial support services on December 4 to provide trauma counseling to students and teachers.

Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Matome Chiloane expressed shock over the violent incident, describing it as completely lawless.

“This incident not only targeted a school leader, but also undermined the sanctity of an educational institution. We are working closely with the police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Chiloane said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the acting principal, his family and the school community at this difficult time.”

Spokesperson for the provincial police Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi attached to Short news that the suspects entered the school around 9 a.m. during classes.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and the suspect is believed to be a black man. Police are investigating an attempted murder,” Nevhuhulwi said.
