A student faces charges Thursday after bringing a firearm onto a school campus.

According to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, students at River Oaks Middle School, located at 4700 New Bern Ave., are safe and there are no known threats at this time.

The WCSO school resource officer received a report of a student in possession of a weapon on campus.

The school was searched and an unloaded firearm was found in the multi-purpose gym.

Deputies said a youth petition will be filed against the student responsible for bringing the gun to school.

“Bringing a weapon onto school grounds is not only illegal, it also poses a serious threat. The safety of our schools depends on everyone remaining vigilant and proactive. We urge students to speak up if they see something disturbing – either to a trusted adult, one of our SROs, or through the WCPSS anonymous tip line,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a statement.
