Humberside Police Dogs will work with the online investigation team

Two police dogs are being trained to assist investigations into criminals abusing technology to commit offences, Humberside Police said.

Digital sniffer dogs Duke and Dexter undergo a six-week training program to detect hidden objects such as USB drives and mobile phones.

Officers said these items are often crucial pieces of evidence in criminal investigations.

The dogs will work with the police’s online investigation team (POLIT), which investigates the online sharing of child sexual exploitation material, once their training is complete.

Police said the two German Shorthaired Pointers are new to the force and a first for the region.

POLIT Det Insp Andy Postill said the dogs will strengthen their ability to combat online child exploitation.

He explained that the dogs will provide support in finding evidence.

“Especially when suspects try to hide things like SIM cards and USB sticks.”

Dog handler PC Steve Matthews said: “These two new recruits will bring unique skills to the team, and it is amazing to see the difference they can make.

“I am proud to be part of this innovative approach to modern policing.”
