Elon Musk’s Grok AI Chatbot Now Free for All X Users: How the AI App Compares to ChatGPT

The Grok AI chatbot is now available for free to all users on the microblogging platform X. The users can now access it whenever they want, albeit with some limitations.

Grok AI chatbot, developed by XAI by Elon Musk was launched last year as a ‘humorous AI assistant’.

The news comes almost a month after media reports claimed that Musk-owned X was testing the free version of Grok AI in some regions.

At launch in 2023, Grok AI was only available to premium users of Claude from Anthropic.

Users previously had to purchase a premium subscription to X to access Grok AI. While xAI has not yet released an official statement, users on the microblogging platform have claimed that they were able to access Grok for free.

However, the free version of the Grok AI chatbot comes with a few limitations. According to the chatbot guidelines, free users can ask up to ten questions every two hours. The use of the chatbot is also limited to three image analyzes and four image generations per day.

Premium users of X, who pay $7 and $14 per month for different plans, still enjoy better access. They can ask up to 50 questions per day.

Users can only access Grok if they have an X account that is older than 7 days and is linked to a verified phone number.

Several X users were excited once access to Grok AI was made free and confirmed access to the chatbot.

“Grok is now free (with usage limits) for all X users. Just tried it. I liked the attitude, panache and some sass instead of just sass… Awaiting full deployment of Grok-3 multimodal. Alone,” said one user, posting his conversation with the AI.

Another user wrote: “Grok is now FREE in most regions! You can ask a maximum of 10 questions per 2 hours unless you subscribe to X Premium! Is the free GROK available in your region?”

Grok vs ChatGPT

Making Grok AI free has created competition between the chatbot and its peers like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Although they are both conversational AIs, ChatGPT 4, the latest version, allows users to ask ten questions every five hours. In comparison, free Grok users can ask the chatbot 10 questions every two hours.

While ChatGPT’s conversation style is predominantly formal, Grok AI leans more toward an informal conversation style, as indicated by users.

Many users have also claimed that Grok answers questions that ChatGPT does not answer. Furthermore, ChatGPT largely has pre-trained data, while Grok has access to real-time data.
