Jammu A shop selling weapons was closed on Saturday after its trade license was not renewed here, even as authorities set a deadline for all firearms license holders to hand in their surplus weapons within a week, officials said.

The owner of the gun shop in Shiv Nagar area, Amarnath Bhargav, alleged that the district administration did not issue him any notice before taking action.

“I applied for renewal of license timely a few months ago and completed all required formalities, but they came and sealed the shop without prior notice,” Bhargav said, demanding an inquiry into the delay in license renewal.

He said he has been running the store for 45 years.

Meanwhile, Jammu District Magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya issued an order directing all firearms license holders of the district to comply with the provisions of the Arms Act 2019.

By law, no one may own more than two firearms. The identified permit holders with more than two firearms must surrender their additional weapons within a week, the official said.

“These permit holders are directed to deposit their other firearm at the nearest police station or authorized armory, in case of members of the Union Armed Forces,” the order said.

“Upon surrender, they must also ensure proper approval of their permits to avoid cancellation and further legal action under the Arms Act,” the report said.

It said non-compliance with the order will lead to immediate cancellation of licenses, with strict action being taken against defaulters.
