(International) winners of Nobel Prizes for AI “concerns about ‘superhuman AI’ have gotten out of hand”

Winners of the Nobel Prize for their research in artificial intelligence (AI) have raised a series of serious concerns about the situation ‘out of control’, saying so-called ‘superhuman AI’ will be developed faster than expected.

Jeffrey Hinton, professor at the University of Toronto in Canada and co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, said at a joint press conference at the Swedish Academy: “I always thought that the development of superintelligence would be much later, but given the recent speed of development I think this will be five to twenty years.”

“We should be seriously concerned about how to maintain control (over AI),” he said.

Professor Hinton, who has been called an AI pioneer, said: “I wish I had thought about security early on,” when asked if there was anything I regretted about going back into the past.

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry who was present at the press conference, also said he agreed with Hinton.

“My ambition is to develop (AI) tools that contribute to scientific discoveries,” Hassabis said. “I think AI will have great tools to help people with today’s problems like disease, energy and climate.”

At the same time, however, we have also considered the risks associated with developing strong general-purpose technologies. He said: “AI is probably one of the most powerful technologies developed by humanity, so we need to take the risks very seriously.”

The winners also emphasized the need for AI regulation.

Professor Hinton first pointed out that there are virtually no regulations on the ‘lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS) to which AI technology is applied.

CEO Hassabis said: “AI regulation is necessary, but it is also very important to regulate it properly,” adding: “As the technology is developing at a very fast pace, the regulatory method we have only a few years ago might not have been a good idea. regulations to discuss now.”
