Flagger, seriously injured in a collision, faces a long road to recovery, mother says

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WGAL) — A Pennsylvania woman who works as a flagger faces a long road to recovery after her mother says she was seriously injured in a collision.

Sharon Downing says her daughter, April Hoyrup, was working as a flagger during a night shift just after 2 a.m. on November 22 when a car hit her. According to Downing, the driver left the scene.

The collision left Hoyrup with serious injuries, including multiple broken bones in her leg and pelvis, and required her to be intubated during treatment.

“Luckily she is a strong girl. She has a long road ahead of her,” Downing said.

Downing says she wants to help draw attention to identifying the driver who hit her daughter, but she also wants to draw attention to the danger that many people who work on the roadside or as flaggers face every day.

“These people work, you know? They are at work and looking forward to coming home to their families as much as you and I do,” she said.

Downing says police are investigating. She says surveillance footage of the incident was recorded by a business across the street and indicates a dark blue or black Audi may have been involved.
