Neighbors in Maryland react to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare

Residents in a quiet Baltimore County community are grappling with the shocking news that a former neighbor, Luigi Mangione, has been named as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week.

Mangione, 26, was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 300 miles (480 kilometers) from the crime scene.

Police and security vehicles are now blocking the entrance to the Hayfields Country Club, owned by Mangione’s family, where at least one of his parents lives.

Neighbors described Mangione, who grew up in Cockeysville, as part of a well-known and respected Maryland family.

“You know, I’m just shocked,” said Chad Chilcot, a neighbor who lives a block away from several Mangione family members.

“The Mangione family is a lovely family. And they are quite involved in the community. They are highly respected,” he said.

Mangione, a graduate of the Gilman School and valedictorian of his class in Baltimore, has left a lasting impression on classmates who are struggling to reconcile their memories with the recent allegations.

“I thought, why did that person look familiar?” said Corey Wey, a former classmate. “Still, it’s just very surreal for me right now. I’ve been in touch with a lot of people who went to my school or were from the area, and knew who he was. And they’re all very devastated and shocked, too, by this news .”

Mangione is also related to Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione. FOX 5 reached out to the representative for comment but has not heard back.

As the investigation continues, the close-knit community of Cockeysville grapples with shocking allegations linked to one of its own.

“It must be horrible to be in their position,” Chilcot said of the Mangione family.

Residents say they are still trying to come to terms with the news, which has shocked their normally quiet neighborhood.
