Outgoing Ogun CP laments the unsolved murder of Chief Financial Officer

The outgoing Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has said that as he leaves office, his only regret is his inability to link the killers of the late Chief Financial Officer to the governor’s office, Mr Taiwo Oyekanmi.

Oyekanmi was ambushed and shot dead on November 29, 2023, while returning from the bank where he went to withdraw some money for the state.

About five armed men reportedly blocked Oyekanmi’s bullion boarding while he was climbing the popular Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta, opened fire on the official, broke the door of the bullion van with sledgehammers and carted away huge sums of money.

Oyekanmi was pronounced dead at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, moved by the incident, announced a N50 million bounty for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.

Alamutu, who retired on Monday after 35 years of meritorious service, told journalists that his only regret was the command’s inability to arrest the attackers.

He said despite efforts to track down the perpetrators, the lack of information and intelligence made it difficult for police to make a breakthrough.

Nevertheless, he expressed his confidence and prayed that his successor would continue where he left off and ensure that justice was served.

“I deeply appreciate the continued support and dedication of my colleagues, community leaders, citizens and the media across my administration.

“I would also like to thank you for your support through your reports. My only regret in this situation is that we have so far failed to arrest the person who shot the chief financial officer.

“That’s the only thing I regret and it still comes down to what we say: no information, no clues. It took us to so many places, it even took us to Ibadan.

“That is the only thing I regret, but God knows my successor will continue where we left off because it is important that we catch the perpetrators and God help my successor,” he said.
