WhatsApp scam has left everyone worried and the Indian government is being asked to intervene and take strong action on these issues. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has sought Meta’s support to tackle scams originating from its own messaging platform.

The government is being pushed into action after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) wanted the entity to investigate and question the scam targeting innocent people in the country. You have them via video and voice calls, which is made even more problematic by the scammers’ use of AI technology.

ET’s report this month said the government is actively working with Meta to tackle the problem, but asked people to be cautious when receiving such calls.

The OTT Apps Challenge

WhatsApp scams are a problem and the governing body is finding it difficult to get the platform to take action on these issues. The main reason is the lack of authority of these authorities over OTT apps such as WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram. But the government has full power to stop these scams by making the platform work on solving them.

The report claims that WhatsApp has already cooperated with the government and blocked the numbers that violate the rules.

That’s not all, telecom operators have raised concerns about OTT apps making detecting these scams a major challenge. Many of these victims receive calls on WhatsApp from international numbers, which is also a headache for the authorities.

The most useful part of WhatsApp has become its biggest problem. You just need someone’s phone number to contact them via messaging app, which is not a difficult task at all. And the scammers are making fun of its reach and popularity. It is up to people to be careful about how they use the app and who they chat with to avoid such mishaps.
