Luigi Mangione’s first prison photos released after family says they are ‘shocked and devastated’ after arrest

The family of Luigi Mangionethe suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is “shocked and devastated” by his arrest in Altoona, Penn. on Monday, December 9. Mangione has been charged with murder in Manhattan.

“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione,” his family said in a statement released by Mangione’s cousin, Maryland Rep. Nino Mangione, obtained by PEOPLE. “We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest.”

Mangione’s family offered prayers for Thompson’s family and asked people to “pray for everyone involved.”

“We are devastated by the news,” the statement concluded.

Mangione’s cousin Nino was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2018. His grandfather, Nicolas B. Mangione, was a real estate developer who also owned Maryland country clubs, nursing homes and the radio station WCBM-AM, according to his 2008 obituary. The Baltimore Sun.

Before the family released their statement, Altoona police released the first photo of Mangione, 26, in custody in a holding cell. Thompson was shot and killed on Wednesday, December 4 as he walked between the Marriott hotel where he was staying and the New York Midtown Hotel. He was in New York City for one UnitedHealth Group meeting of investors. Thompson does survived by his wife and two sons.

Mangione was identified as the main suspect early Monday. He was stopped at an Altoona McDonald’s, where a customer recognized him and an employee reported his suspicious behavior. Police said they found him with a gun and a silencer similar to those used in the shooting, a three-page manifesto and a fake New Jersey ID that he allegedly used to get into an Upper West Side hostel stay.

The suspect was charged in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.and is being held without bail. He faces five charges in Pennsylvania, including two felony counts of forgery and carrying a firearm without a permit. He did not enter a plea and his next court hearing was scheduled for December 23.

Following the arraignment in Pennsylvania, prosecutors in New York charged Mangione with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document and one count of second-degree possession of a forged document. third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, according to online records.
