Wheelchairs at Shanghai Disneyland are only allowed for people with disabilities or difficulty moving

SHANGHAI – The Shanghai Disney Resort has announced updates to its wheelchair policy effective December 10, aiming to better serve guests with mobility needs while ensuring the safety of the park.

Under the revised policy, visitors with assisted mobility needs due to disability, advanced age or relevant medical conditions can continue to use manual wheelchairs in the park.

Guests with mobility issues in their lower extremities are allowed to bring powered wheelchairs into the park and must meet specific requirements including maintaining walking speed at a maximum limit of 6 km/h and using vehicles with at least three wheels.

Power wheelchair users must contact the Shanghai Disney Resort Reservation Center by 8:00 PM at least two days before their visit. After receiving the resort’s reservation confirmation, visitors are required to provide valid proof of disability when entering the park, according to the new rules.

Electrically powered wheelchairs cannot be transferred to other visitors during the visitor’s entire visit and may not be left unattended in the park, the prosecutor’s office said.

The policy also covers changes to manual wheelchairs, stating that all electrically powered attachments must be installed before entering the park and require the same prior registration as electrically powered wheelchairs. Changes on site are not permitted.

These changes complement Shanghai Disney Resort’s existing accessible facilities and services, including walking paths and facilities for persons with mobility needs, sign language interpretation for entertainment shows for persons with hearing impairments, and tactile pathways and braille guides for persons with visual impairments. resort.

Users on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu are recommending that visitors to Shanghai Disneyland rent electric wheelchairs as a “strategy” to get around the 3.9 square kilometer park, Walt Disney’s largest.

Many have also complained about the rampant use of wheelchairs at the theme park, with the mobility aids getting in the way or even colliding with other visitors.

“Some people have used power wheelchairs, but they may not need them for mobility,” said Murray King, vice president of Public Affairs and Communications at Shanghai Disney Resort. “Inexperienced users of power wheelchairs have been observed operating them at too high a speed and in a manner that may affect other guests.” CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
