Woman seriously injured in knife attack in Hougang, Latest Singapore News

A man has been arrested following a knife attack in Hougang that left a female hardware store worker seriously injured and the store manager with lacerations.

The attacker, said to be a delivery boy, was also injured in the incident which took place at Block 210, Hougang Street 21.

Witnesses said a loud argument broke out at Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware store, located next to Kovan Market and Food Center, at around 11 a.m. on December 10, just before the incident.

The man, who area store owners said had been spotted making deliveries to the hardware store, was heard arguing with the female employee.

He then pulled out a knife in front of shoppers and waved it around. The store manager struggled with the man and was injured.

The woman tried to run away but fell to the ground before the man repeatedly used the knife on her. According to witnesses, she had multiple cuts on her back.

The attacker also suffered injuries in the incident.

Witnesses said paramedics arrived on the scene minutes later, while heavily armed police officers quickly cordoned off the area.

All three were taken to hospital, while the attacker was escorted by police officers.

Police had cordoned off the hardware store and the adjacent fruit stall and jewelry store when The Straits Times arrived around 2 p.m.

A woman in her 60s who worked at a nearby department store said she heard a loud argument just before the incident.

“We then heard a woman screaming, and a few people went to see what was going on,” said the woman, who did not want to be named.

“They quickly came back and told everyone to hide in the store because there was a man with a knife.”

She said staff and several customers at a department store then hid in the store until police arrived.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force said they transferred two people to Changi General Hospital and another person to Sengkang General Hospital after receiving a call for help at around 11.05am.
