The 54-year-old bus driver in the Kurla accident in Mumbai had started driving Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) buses early this month.

He was identified as Sanjay More and also previously worked for the same company but drove minibuses.

The death toll in Monday’s accident, which took place on SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West) around 9.30 pm, has risen to seven, while as many as 42 others were rushed to different hospitals.

Prima facie investigation into the matter suggested that there was no technical defect in the bus.

The bus is owned by a company called Maurya, which supplied the vehicle to BEST, investigations reveal.

THE KURLA BUS ACCIDENT

On Monday, a bus rammed into pedestrians and some vehicles after the driver lost control of the wheels, officials told news agency PTI.

The BEST bus, after plowing through pedestrians and vehicles, entered a residential area, Buddha Colony, and came to a halt, officials said.

Three deaths were reported on Monday.

A civilian official said on Tuesday that the death toll in the incident had risen to seven.

The official said a total of 49 persons were rushed to different hospitals following the accident.

Of them, 35 were taken to the government-run Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Two of them were brought dead while two others were declared dead after admission to the medical facility, the official said.

Later, six injured people were shifted from Bhabha Hospital to Sion Hospital where one of them died during treatment.

Of the total 49 injured, three were rushed to nearby Kohinoor Hospital where one person was declared brought dead, while the condition of the other two was critical.

Six other injured people were taken to the private Habib Hospital where one of them was declared dead while the others were receiving treatment.

Four police personnel were also injured in the accident. They were admitted to the government-run Seven Hills Hospital and their condition was stable.

Besides, a 35-year-old man was admitted to the private city hospital in Kurla, the official said.

Police took the bus driver, Sanjay More, into custody after the incident and he was booked on a charge of manslaughter not amounting to murder, according to officials.

His blood samples were also taken to test whether he was under the influence of alcohol, an official said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
