Man caught with cocaine in flashlight acquitted

A man who was allegedly caught in possession of a small amount of cocaine hidden in a flashlight while at Sangster International Airport is now a free man.

Denzil Scott, from St. James, walked free from the parish court on Monday after being found not guilty of possession of cocaine.

He was represented by attorney Michael Hemmings.

According to court documents, on March 18, law enforcement officers acted on a tip and proceeded to the public parking lot at the airport, where they spotted a Toyota Corolla that reportedly belonged to Scott.

He gave law enforcement officers permission to search the vehicle, which led to the discovery of a black and yellow flashlight on one of the car seats. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the flashlight had two batteries, one of which contained a piece of tissue paper enclosed in a clear bag containing 3.07 grams of cocaine.

When the officer handed the item to him, he claimed to have no knowledge of the cocaine hidden in the battery.

Scott was subsequently arrested and charged.

At Monday’s hearing, the court found that although the accused was in possession of the cocaine found in his car, the Crown could not prove he knew the item in the car contained a battery of cocaine.

As a result, Parish Judge Nationsha Fairclough-Hylton ruled that the Crown failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the battery in the flashlight contained cocaine, resulting in Scott’s acquittal.
