Former human rights lawyer Phil Shiner avoids jail for fraud in cases against British soldiers | British news

A former human rights lawyer has been given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting three counts of fraud in connection with cases against British soldiers.

Phil Shiner, 67, from Birmingham, was the lead lawyer at the law firm Public Interest Lawyers.

He rose to prominence for representing Iraqi civilians accused of torture and unlawful killings of British forces.

Following Shiner’s conviction earlier this year, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said his actions placed “untold pressure” on members of the British Armed Forces.

Andy Kelly, head of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit, said: “This conviction is a milestone in a thorough and complex national and international investigation.”
