Lawrence Bishnoi Interview Row | The assistance of ED can be used in investigations against police officers if proceeds from crime are involved: P&H HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today orally said that the Union government may seek assistance from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in case economic crimes were allegedly committed by the police officials involved in the Lawrence Bishnoi TV interview in the police custody case .

Judge Anupinder Singh Grewal And Justice Lapita Banerji While going through the sealed cover report of Special DGP Prabodh Kumar on the progress of investigation and action taken against the concerned police officials, he verbally asked the Union government whether proceeds of crime were coming in or economic crimes were being committed , after which ED’s help could be requested.

“We will pass on a lead to the ED for assistance if necessary,” Judge Grewal said orally.

ASG Satya Pal Jain noted that “the Union is ready to comply if any directions are given.”

ASG Satya Pal Jain further submitted that the Union government has already granted permission to the Punjab government for installation of jammers in the jails and no further permission is required.

Since the Amicus Curiae Tanu Bedi was not present, the Court stayed the case.

The Court heard it suo moto case against the use of mobile phones in prisons.

After SIT was composed by the Supreme Court, it revealed that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s first interview “which glorified crime and criminals” was conducted while he was in a CIA building in Kharar in Punjab, and that the second interview took place in a jail in Jaipur.
