York Region police say they have disrupted the ‘criminal network’ planning home burglaries

The results are part of a year-long investigation called “Project Skyfall,” announced Tuesday by York Regional Police.

Police in York Region have arrested 17 people they say are part of a “multi-faceted criminal organization” involved in home invasions, armed robberies and drug trafficking in the Greater Toronto Area.

The results are part of a year-long investigation called “Project Skyfall,” announced Tuesday by York Regional Police. The suspects face a total of 83 charges.

“Today we are here to send a very strong message that York Regional Police will not tolerate armed criminals violating the sanctity of the homes in our community. And we will use all available tools to eliminate the threats that illegal firearms and organized crime pose to the residents of York Region,” Deputy Chief of Investigations Alvaro Almeida said at a press conference.

In addition to the arrest, investigators also seized $14 million worth of drugs and three guns, which were on display during the press conference.

SOME SUSPECTS ARE ALREADY out on bail, police say

Almeida said six of the people were released on conditional bail or otherwise when they were arrested, including one who was on parole for armed robbery and discharging a firearm.

He added that three others are subject to a firearms ban.

Almeida revealed that seven of the suspects had already been released on bail prior to the press conference.

“We know that profit-driven crime is complex and those responsible know no boundaries. If it makes them money, whether it’s armed robbery, drug trafficking or terrorizing a family in their own home, criminals will seize the opportunity and repeat this behavior again and again. These individuals pose a danger to our community,” he said.

“They should have been taken into custody but unfortunately they have been released. This must change. I can assure you that police everywhere are working very hard to prevent crime every day.”
