‘Joy Bangla’ no longer the national slogan of Bangladesh as the Supreme Court stays the HC verdict

Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the Supreme Court’s order declaring ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan of the Supreme Court. Bangladesh .

The verdict was delivered by a court headed by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, after hearing the state’s appeal on Tuesday.

“Joy Bangla” is a slogan and rallying cry used in Bangladesh to express nationalism regarding the geopolitical, cultural and historical region of Bengal, and to honor Bangamata.

Earlier, on December 2, the state filed a petition seeking a stay of the Supreme Court verdict declaring ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. The original petition, filed in 2017 by Supreme Court lawyer Dr Bashir Ahmed, sought the declaration of “Joy Bangla” as the national slogan.

On March 10, 2020, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader delivered the landmark verdict. “We declare that ‘Joy Bangla’ will be the national slogan of Bangladesh,” part of the verdict read in Bangla.

After a change of government on August 5 after the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fled the country, the state decided to suspend the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Additional Attorney General Advocate Anik R Haque confirmed the filing of the stay request on December 2.
