WALL – A 16-year-old Garfield boy was charged with 23 counts of theft, trespassing and obstruction last weekend after police said he was caught with stolen mail from local businesses near Monmouth Executive Airport.

The teenager, who is not being identified due to his age, was arrested in the area of Industrial Road on Saturday evening. He was later released into the care of his mother, police said.

At the time of his arrest, the boy was in possession of mail from multiple businesses in that area, Wall Police Lt. Steven Nash said.

County police officers had increased patrols in the area after reports of mail theft there, Nash said.

On Saturday at 8:40 p.m., Wall Police Detective Michael Cacciatore observed the teen “acting suspiciously in the area of Industrial Road,” Nash explained.

When the teen realized he was being watched by Cacciatore, the boy dropped a bag he was carrying and refused the officer’s instructions to stop walking before he was apprehended.
