Stop sign violation leads to drug bust in Norwich

NORWICH, CT (WFSB) – A driver in Norwich was arrested on drug charges after state police stopped his vehicle.

They said an officer spotted a driver failing to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Taftville Occum Road and Bridge Street around 2:35 a.m. Monday.

The officer observed that the driver had entered the crosswalk before coming to a stop, which was beyond both the painted stop line and the posted stop sign, state police said.

As a result, the officer activated emergency lights and a siren to initiate the traffic stop.

The driver of the vehicle complied and pulled the vehicle to the right shoulder on Bridge Street.

State police identified the driver at that time as Jones.

During the investigation, state police said the officer noticed signs of criminal drug activity. Additionally, Jones was known to them from previous interactions.

The trooper requested that Jones step out of his vehicle to continue, and Jones agreed.

A narcotics K9 responded to assist with the investigation.

The K9 detected something, and state police said Jones tried to flee.

They said he ran back to his car, got into the driver’s seat, closed the door and tried to drive away from the traffic stop.

Both troopers on scene were able to remove Jones from the vehicle before he could put it in line. They said they placed him in handcuffs without further incident.

A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 426 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 8.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, several prescription pills, a digital scale and $280 in cash.

He was held on a $300,000 bond and appeared in Norwich Superior Court later in the day on Monday.
