Don Gilet from Death in Paradise was “terrified” to replace Ralf Little

Death in paradise star Don Gilet has admitted he was “terrified” at the prospect of being replaced Ralf Klein in the leading role.

It was announced in March that Little would leave BBC crime series after four years in the role of DI Neville Parker, with Gilet is confirmed as his replacement in May after landing the role of DI Mervin Wilson.

Gilet, which previously appeared in EastEnders And Holby townis scheduled to make its debut on the show in the upcoming Christmas specialwith the star admitting he had some big shoes to fill.

“I’m sure it will come as no surprise to say that it was both exhilarating and terrifying,” he said. “I compare it to one of those scary rides in an amusement park. I’m going to do it and I know it’s going to be scary, but I’m going to do it.

‘You challenge yourself. Then you sit in the chair and say, “What did I just let myself in to?!” But it was exciting because I knew I was starting this new journey,” he continued, before detailing his own experiences watching the show in the past.

“I watched to see the style of the show, and was drawn to the way they managed to balance the seriousness and seriousness of a crime show – because there are murders! – with the quirkiness from the character’s perspective, which gives it a light touch and a comedic touch.”

Naturally, the climate in the Caribbean is very different from what Gilet is used to when it comes to work, and the actor admitted that the conditions posed challenges despite the natural beauty on offer.

“It’s intense because you have that heat from the beginning to the end of the day,” he said. “It does get to a point where you get used to it, but it takes that extra layer of concentration. You can’t turn the temperature down, but it’s a beautiful backdrop to photograph against.

“Sometimes you have to pinch yourself and look at where you are and what you’re doing. It’s a beautiful place. I haven’t had much chance to get out and see how beautiful it is yet. Once you get used to the temperature, it’s a great job!”
