Inmate hospitalized after assault in B.C.’s maximum security prison

An inmate at B.C.’s only maximum-security federal prison has been hospitalized after being attacked last week, officials say.

Correctional Service Canada says the attack happened on December 3 at Kent Institution in Agassiz. No other inmates or staff members were injured.

The injured victim was transported to a hospital outside the prison for treatment but has since returned, according to a Monday news release.

“The attackers have been identified and appropriate action has been taken,” the press release said.

The Agassiz RCMP and the facility are investigating the incident, and CSC says it will review the matter and “take appropriate action” to prevent similar issues in the future.

“The safety and security of institutions, their personnel and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” the news release said.
