The South Korean opposition is considering filing a new impeachment motion against Yoon

South Korea’s main opposition party plans to introduce a new bill aimed at ousting President Yoon Suk-yeol over his declaration of martial law. The Democratic Party plans to submit the bill to the National Assembly on Wednesday, with a vote expected to take place on Saturday.

The first impeachment motion failed last Saturday after most members of the ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote.

The motion requires the support of at least two-thirds of the National Assembly to pass. That means at least eight lawmakers from the ruling party must give their approval.

The opposition camp urges PPP members to vote in favor of impeachment.

Some ruling party lawmakers have expressed their intention to vote this time. Members of the public have called for the president’s impeachment. They also criticized lawmakers who did not participate in the vote.

The PPP has discussed what to do next with Yoon’s term in office.

The party’s working team has presented two proposals. One proposal is for Yoon to step down in February next year and hold early presidential elections in April. The other proposal is for Yoon to resign in March and hold elections in May.

Meanwhile, South Korean media said prosecutors arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on Tuesday. Prosecutors allege he advised the president to declare martial law.

Police on Wednesday arrested the national police chief and Seoul’s top police officer on suspicion of taking part in an uprising.
