JR East announces a ten-year plan to drastically overhaul Suica

East Japan Railway (JR East) on Tuesday announced a 10-year plan to dramatically revamp Suica services, including features such as automatic ticketing, cashless payments of more than ¥20,000 and personal money transfers. The company also plans to offer a subscription service.

Calling the initiative the “Suica Renaissance,” the transportation IC company plans to expand Suica beyond just a transportation tool over the next decade and become one for all payment-related needs.

Within the next decade, JR East will develop automated walk-through gate technology so passengers can enter the train platform without having to tap their Suica card or phone at the ticket gates. For stations in more rural areas where there are no ticket gates, the company plans to use passengers’ location information to track their fare costs.
