New No. 1 Test batsman crowned as Root relinquishes top spot

Brook achieved scores of 123 and 55 during England’s impressive 323-run win over the Black Caps at Basin Reserve and Root – who managed innings of three and 106 in the same match – had no hesitation in nominating his successor as the best player in the world after the match.

“If you ask me, Brooky is by far the best player in the world right now,” Root said after England’s victory.

“He can play such an all-round game, he can absorb pressure, he can apply it, he can hit you over the head for six hours, he can scoop you over the head for six hours, he can spin hit, he can seam batting. He’s so difficult to bowl against.”
