Illinois lawmakers consider “psychedelic therapy” a form of treatment

CHICAGO (WIFR) – Illinois lawmakers are looking for new ways to help people with mental illness in the state.

The House Mental Health and Addiction Committee looked at psychedelics as a potential treatment tool for behavioral health – specifically psilocybin.

Psilocybin is commonly referred to as ‘magic mushrooms’.

Colorado and Oregon are the only states that have legalized psilocybin for medical use, but Illinois could become the third state to join the list.

Doctor Jessica Punzo, a clinical psychologist in Illinois, says psilocybin can be beneficial for people with mental health problems. “People with psychological problems deserve better. They deserve more than what they got and they deserve hope,” said Punzo. “For our part, as providers, researchers, government officials and policymakers, we have a responsibility in advancing new and promising treatment options for them.”
