AAP announces 784 candidates for the Punjab MC polls

With just a day left to file nomination papers, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday announced 784 candidates for the upcoming Municipal Corporation (MC) elections.

The announcement was made by AAP Punjab chief Aman Arora and working president Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi. The party would have to announce candidates for 977 wards of five municipal corporations and 44 municipal councils.

Arora said the remaining candidates will be announced later on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Tuesday released its first list of 63 candidates for the civic council elections. The party mainly fielded new faces. However, the distribution of tickets has sparked a row within the Congress, with senior leaders and former MLAs Bains brothers at loggerheads as both seek tickets for their own confidantes.

Elections would be held on December 21 for five municipal corporations – Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara – and for 44 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab.

The process for submitting nominations started on December 9 and the last date is December 12. The examination of nomination papers will take place on December 13 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is December 14.
