Premier League news: Injury numbers and days missed revealed

BBC Sport, using data from the website First injuries, externallooked at which team has suffered the most from injuries this season.

Fabian Hurzeler has had a difficult start to life in English football from an injury perspective, although his seventh-place finish in the Premier League suggests he is more than capable of dealing with it.

West Ham fans may be even more frustrated with their season when they hear that they have had the fewest injuries in the top flight.

Comparing the injury situation now with the same stage last season, the overall numbers have actually fallen, according to Ben Dinnery of Premier Injuries Ltd.

“Year on year, the number of injury incidents has been reduced by around 20% and the ‘burden’ on clubs – the number of days missed by injured players – has been reduced by around 30%,” he said.

His data is calculated from the opening day of the season, so players who were already injured when they started the season – such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries to Brentford’s Rico Henry, Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings and Brighton’s Solly March – do not count along. .

“Perhaps the narrative (of an increase in injuries) is driven by some high-profile managers and the prominence of major injuries to higher-status players such as Manchester City’s Rodri,” Dinnery added.

“The injury story is not being pushed by Kieran McKenna at Ipswich or Fabian Hurzeler at Brighton.

“They don’t use their sidelined players as an excuse, even though Ipswich have lost some big players as they tried to adapt to the intensity and rigors of Premier League football.

“Brighton didn’t have a great record last year, but they did struggle in European football. The headline figures are one thing, but football is a contact sport. Perhaps it is a testament to their recruitment of a squad with strength and depth that they are doing despite the number of injuries, it is still good.”
