New Orleans Councilwoman Helena Moreno announces mayoral run

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans Councilwoman Helena Moreno has officially announced she is running for mayor.

Moreno was elected to the city council in 2017. She says she is running to lead New Orleans and released a video Wednesday morning (December 11) to announce her campaign.

Moreno began her career as a journalist in New Orleans before winning a seat as a state lawmaker in Baton Rouge. She says during her time in the Capitol, she fought to improve access to health care, increase public safety and wages, and pass legislation to protect victims of domestic violence.

Following her time in the Legislature, she was elected to the New Orleans City Council and served as council president. During this time, she represented the city during the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Ida.

In her campaign announcement, she says she will be mayor 24-7 and promises to work overtime for safer neighborhoods and complete infrastructure projects that have exceeded planned timelines.

Fox 8 has reached out to Councilman Oliver Thomas, who says he has not yet made a decision on whether he will run for mayor.

Thomas told Fox 8 that there is too much work to be done in the city right now between the fight against crime, the budget and the upcoming Super Bowl to launch a campaign right now. He says his focus is on his position as councilman, given the challenges in New Orleans.
