Man crossing road near Sunshine Bridge killed in crash

ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana State Police (LSP) troopers are investigating after a truck struck and killed a man as he walked near the Sunshine Bridge on Tuesday morning, December 10.

Officials identified the victim as Randolph McKinley, 63, of Convent.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Highway 70, just west of the Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish.

According to LSP, a 2014 GMC Sierra was traveling east on Highway 70 when, for reasons still under investigation, it struck McKinley, who was heading north in the eastbound lanes of the road.

State police said McKinley died at the scene from his injuries, while the driver of the GMC, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

Police do not suspect the driver was injured. They said the driver voluntarily provided a breath sample, which found no alcohol.

A standard toxicology sample was collected from McKinley for analysis, officials confirmed.

This is an ongoing investigation.
