Man arrested after Cortland police heard a woman screaming for help

CORTLAND (WBNG) – Cortland police announced the arrest of a man for assault on Wednesday.

Police said they arrested 47-year-old Mark Skodzinsky. He was charged with assault and criminal mischief.

On December 5, officers responded to a violent altercation outside the Cortland Courthouse. The department said some officers in a nearby office attending a meeting heard a woman’s screams for help.

Upon arrival, officers said they found Skodzinsky on top of the victim, a 51-year-old woman, repeatedly punching and threatening her.

Police said officers immediately intervened and removed him from the victim. He was subsequently taken into custody.

The department stated that the victim suffered physical injuries and personal property was damaged during the assault. They noted that the attack victim was the target of the attack.

Skodzinsky was charged and released. He will appear in court again on December 26.

An order of protection was requested on behalf of the victim.
