Mumbai:

A 55-year-old man hailing from Kerala died on Wednesday evening after he was run over by a BEST bus in south Mumbai, officials said, in the second fatal accident involving a city transport vehicle in Mumbai in three days.

The victim was first hit by a speeding motorcycle and then run over by the bus near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), they said.

The bus driver, Dnyandeo Jagdale, was taken into custody for investigation, they said.

The accident took place two days after the gruesome bus tragedy in the Kurla area of the metropolis in which an out-of-control electric bus of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) company fatally knocked down seven persons and injured 42 others on Monday evening.

“On Wednesday around 4.30 pm, a motorcyclist hit a man in front of Hotel Shivala near CSMT, causing him to fall on the road. At that time, a speeding BEST bus from Anushakti Nagar towards Electric House in South Mumbai ran over him” , said a police official.

The pedestrian fell under the rear wheel of the BEST bus and died on the spot, he said.

The deceased person was identified by police as Hasenar Anduhi, a resident of Badaiyabuka Bela in Kasaragod district of Kerala.

Driver Jagdale was taken into custody by officials of Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg police station for investigation, he said, adding that a case was registered in this regard.

The police have started a search for the motorcyclist who hit the pedestrian.

A senior BEST official said the bus is owned by a private wet-lease operator but the driver Jagdale is an employee of the civil corporation.

In the Kurla accident, police have arrested Sanjay More (54), who was behind the wheel of the ill-fated bus.
