According to the BBC, Mangione is accused of murdering Thompson, who was fatally shot in the back outside the prison last Wednesday. Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York.

Mangione’s friends and former colleagues have expressed their shock after hearing the news. “I don’t understand it,” a former roommate of Mangione’s, RJ Martin, told CNN. “It’s unbelievable.”

Mangione comes from an influential Italian-American family in Baltimore and is the son of Louis, 71, and Kathleen Zannino Mangione, 60, according to the Daily Mail.

Louis is reportedly the owner of Lorien Health Services, while Kathleen runs a boutique travel company and comes from a prominent Italian-American family.

Luigi’s paternal grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr, was a self-made real estate developer. The New York Times notes that Luigi’s grandparents purchased the Turf Valley Country Club in Maryland in the 1970s and expanded their business ventures by also purchasing the Hayfields Country Club. The family also owned the local radio station WCBM. Luigi had a privileged upbringing and attended an Ivy League school.
