Woman killed in head-on collision that critically injured Calera police officer in Chilton County

A woman was killed in a head-on collision in Chilton County that also injured a Calera police officer.

The wreck happened on Alabama Highway 191 on Tuesday at 5:23 p.m at the intersection of County Road 42 West.

Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said the crash involved an SUV and a City of Calera police vehicle driven by an on-duty officer heading to her Chilton County home.

The woman in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Police and the Chilton County Coroner’s Office have not released the name of the woman killed.

Calera Police Chief David Hyche said his officer was seriously injured. Her ambulance was escorted to the hospital in Birmingham by multiple law enforcement agencies.

“This was a terrible accident that affected two families and communities,” Hyche said. “Our prayers go out to both the family of our officer and the family and friends of the lady who tragically lost her life.”

Fulmer said the investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Jemison Police Traffic Homicide Unit, assisted by the Clanton Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit.

“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to everyone involved,” Fulmer said.

The chief said officers from every agency in the county responded and assisted.

“I really appreciate that,” he said. “It takes a team and everyone working together to resolve these types of incidents the way they should be handled.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to call Cpl. Floyd Glass or Officer Nathan Bland at 205-688-4492.
