King Charles asked through the Iwi Chairs Forum to intervene in the Treaty dispute

King Charles shares traditional Māori hongi with Mere Takoko, CEO of Pacific Whale Fund, at St James Palace, London.

  • The Iwi Chairs Forum has called on King Charles to uphold the honor of the Crown over the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • The forum claims the National-led government’s actions are an “attack” on the Treaty, citing concerns over Māori neighborhoods and changes to resource management.
  • The letter, signed by more than 500 people, followed a national hīkoi with more than 43,000 participants.

The Iwi Chairs Forum has written to King Charles III, who is king of both New Zealand and the Commonwealth countries including Britain, for help in upholding the honor of the second party to the Treaty of Waitangi, the Crown.

In its letter, the forum, which represents 80 iwi, said there had been an “attack” on the Treaty by the New Zealand-led coalition government.

It asked the king to “ensure that the government does not, by its actions, tarnish the honor of the Crown.”

“Please remind them that they must respect their responsibility to act as an honorable partner on your behalf,” the letter said.
