Revoke tungsten mining license, says Kanimozhi

DMK MP Kanimozhi on Wednesday sought cancellation of the permit granted to a private company for tungsten mining in Madurai.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Ms. Kanimozhi said the issue had several environmental, social, federal and cultural implications, necessitating immediate intervention to protect the region. The Tamil Nadu government on December 9 passed a resolution opposing the project, citing the Union government’s inability to consult the state government on the issue, she said, adding that the resolution calls for the revocation of the permit and emphasizes the need for state approval on resources. management.

“The Tamil Nadu government has also written to the Union government asking them to stop this at the earliest as there are protests in the area and it is a very important protected site for biodiversity. It also means a lot culturally because there are Jain monuments and one of the first Tamil inscriptions was found there,” she said.

The DMK MP said many countries were halting this (mining) as it was affecting farmers. “Leakages from the mine site have also affected agricultural production,” she added.

Other DMK members, including TR Baalu, asked the Union government to immediately respond to the issue. “They allowed these tungsten mines to be assigned to a private party. This is very wrong,” Mr Baalu said.
